There are as many Milford Sound cruise operators as there are sheep in New Zealand (okay–not really, but there are a TON). Most of the day cruises follow the same route, sailing from the harbor out toward the Tasman Sea and back, stopping along the way for waterfalls, wildlife, and look how small the boat is next to those mountains moments.

I booked this one, which was a classic, open-air top deck boat with cozy indoor seating on the main deck. With so many similar options, the real kicker here was the fantastic crew, who seemed genuinely excited to be there and kept up detailed commentary about the wildlife and geology of the area! There was also a selection of cookies, tea, and hot chocolate, which was a warm, welcome touch with how wet and cold you can get depending on how much time you spend on the top deck (and whether you decide to literally stand under a waterfall from the bow of the ship, which I did haha).

What is the best month to visit Milford Sound?

There is no bad time to visit Milford Sound. Summer (December-February) is the busiest time to visit, so if you want avoid crowds, visit in the shoulder seasons of March, April, or September, October, and November. But honestly, we went in summer and it was perfect!

More important than time of year for visiting Milford Sound is weather. If the weather forecast says rain, that’s your sign to book it.

Milford Sound is already one of the wettest places in New Zealand, and when it rains it transforms into this dramatic, almost mythic landscape. Hundreds of temporary waterfalls appear out of nowhere, spilling from mossy cliffs and disappearing into the fjord. There are still waterfalls on dryer days, but when it rains, they multiply ten fold.

People always say, “There’s no bad weather in Milford Sound, only different kinds of beautiful,” and they’re right. Rainy is best, but even sunshine feels otherworldly.

Also, there’s seasonal wildlife in Milford Sound. If you’re dreaming of going while the seals, whales, or penguins are around, be sure to check wildlife seasonality here. Otherwise, just go when you can!

How much does a Milford Sound day cruise cost?

Most cruises are around $100–$150 NZD per person. Ours was $129 NZD through GetYourGuide, and totally worth it.

There are pricier options with meals, scenic flights, and overnights, but the standard cruises take the same route and show you the same waterfalls and wildlife—so don’t stress about missing anything if you’re just going for a day.

How long does a Milford Sound day cruise take?

Day cruises typically last about 2 hours, which felt like the perfect amount of time. You’ll:

• Sail all the way out to the Tasman Sea
• Drift beneath massive waterfalls (and probably get soaked)
• Cruise past rocky outcrops with sea lions snoozing and barking
• Learn cool facts about the fjord and wildlife from the onboard guide
• Snap 400 photos of misty mountains (and delete half later because your camera lens was wet or foggy)

It’s short enough to not get over the awe of the place, but long enough to really soak in the magic.

What should you wear to stay warm and dry?

Even if you’re going in summer, assume it’s going to feel like winter!

We wore basic water resistant (not waterproof, water resistant) jackets and were SOAKED and cold, even in the middle of summer. The rain was sideways, the wind was wild, and the waterfall spray was next-level. We laughed through it, but we were frozen by the end.

Here’s what you should wear:

• Waterproof jacket with a real hood
• Warm, fleece layers underneath
• Waterproof pants or quick-dry hiking pants. I shrugged off this suggestion and had to walk around in wet underwear all day 😅
• Comfortable shoes with good grip (the deck gets slippery)
• Gloves. My hands were numb by the time we got off the boat because not only was I gloveless, but the insides of my jacket pockets were wet
• A dry bag or ziplock for your phone or camera if they aren’t waterproof

There is warm, cozy indoor seating, but the best views are outside—and that means getting wet.

Final verdict: Is a Milford Sound cruise worth it for a day? (Pros & cons)

I think the pros of visiting Milford Sound on a day cruise are clear—I personally will never forget popping out of the mountain tunnel to see the towering mountains with waterfalls for the first time, or seeing the tiny sea lion pups playing in the fjord.

If there are cons to the day cruise experience, the main one would be that it’s a quick experience at just around 2 hours. If you have a flexible schedule and want to spend more time there, consider an overnight cruise. Another thing to consider is that food options are limited near Milford Sound. There is a small cafe with sandwiches and cafe items, but not much else if you have picky eaters!

Fun things to do in Milford Sound after your boat tour

After the cruise, there are so many fantastic, scenic hikes (short and long) that you can do to milk your time in Fiordland National Park. We made a day trip of it, leaving Milford Sound and heading toward the front of the park, stopping for gorgeous day hikes to glacier lakes and picnics along the way.

You can find the best day hikes in Milford Sound here on their official website, and the one I most recommend is the Lake Marion trek! There are charming suspension bridges, incredible views, and it ends in a glacier lake where we jumped in for a swim before heading back down. It was freezing (as a glacier lake should be!) but so refreshing after the hike up!
