What’s the best rooftop bar in Rome with a sunset view (and no crowds)?

Feb 15, 2023

Rome, Italy is one of the most romantic cities in the world. So why wouldn’t you be looking for the best rooftop bar in Rome to soak it all in?!

Unfortunately, Rome full of overpriced, ritzy, crowded rooftop bars with dramatic drinks and reservations that are fully booked by the influencer crowd months in advance.

This is my nightmare (and if you’re here reading this, probably yours too).

So when I Googled “best rooftop bars Rome,” I was looking for one with an absolutely unique view to enjoy sunset in a vibey, intimate setting, I sifted through what felt like hundreds of overrun tourist trap rooftops on Tripadvisor overtaken by Instagram models.

Fortunately for me (and now you!) I found Oro Bistrot– a chic hidden gem rooftop bistro at the NH Collection Rome Fori Imperiali hotel with a stunning terrace bar, fine dining, and a tasting menu.

Quick guide: Oro Bistrot rooftop bar in Rome

Oro Bistrot is located between the Fori di Traiano and the Altare della Patria and features elegant (but fun!) cuisine. This was one of my favorite experiences in Rome, so if you’re looking for an unforgettable sunset experience with a view of Rome you can’t get anywhere else, this is your place!

How’s the view?

11/10. This open air rooftop has panoramic views of Roma and is even better if you time it with the sunset. The view from Oro Bistrot speaks for itself!

How are the vibes?

12/10. We spent a few hours reveling on open air rooftop in plush lounge chairs with soft music, Italian wine, and appetizers as the sun gently dropped on the Roman skyline.

Oro Bistrot is softly lit, quieter, and more intimate than any rooftop bar I’ve enjoyed in Europe. It’s chill and intimate for a small group of friends or family to enjoy deep conversations or for couples looking for a romantic date spot in Rome.

Pro tip: Do not expect American-style customer service at restaurants in Europe. In Italy, meals and drinks are meant to be savored, enjoyable, and not disrupted every 15 minutes by a server checking on you. It’s cultural- learn more about the do’s and don’ts of dining in Italy here so that you have the right expectations! You’ll mostly be left alone and things generally take longer than you’re accustomed to if you’re visiting Italy from the United States.

What kind of menu and prices can I expect?

The menu features Italian cuisine and the chef is Sicilian. Per the website, and true to our experience, “All drinks are accompanied by the classic Italian aperitif and some whims from our Chef, and a dedicated menu will leave you free to complete your experience.”

Main course items run between 20-35 euro and desserts are between 10-15 euro.

If you want more information about the pricing and options, check out the menu here!

Do I need a reservation for Oro Bistrot?

Definitely. Make a reservation on OpenTable in advance, and be sure to check that you’re actually booking the rooftop, because it’s open seasonally.

And if you’re booking the rooftop, make sure you book the for dining if you want to eat a meal vs. the lounge if you just want drinks and small bites.

Do they cater to different dietary restrictions?

Yes. Oro Bistrot caters to dietary restrictions including gluten free, lactose intolerance, nut allergies, vegan, and vegetarian lifestyles. If you have a different dietary restriction, I recommend contacting them directly to see if they are able to accommodate it.

Will my special occasion be acknowledged by the staff?

I’m perplexed by this expectation. I’m an American, that kind of personal acknowledgement and freebies for a special occasion is a very American thing.

If you’re celebrating a special occasion and want to be acknowledged, ask directly if that’s something the restaurant does before you book it. Most restaurants in Europe don’t cater to this American expectation of special acknowledgement of some kind of personal celebration. Again, I just want to prepare you to shed the mindset or expectations you have from your home country so that you’re not confused or disappointed by the norm in the place you’re visiting!

That said, the consensus is that no, Oro Bistrot does not have freebies for special occasions. If you have one, email them in advance to see what you can have arranged!

What else do I need to know?

Like with any other activity you book when you travel, I recommend that you do your research if you’re looking for something particular and don’t want to be disappointed.
