Best scuba diving destinations in the world (2026 guide + real experiences!)

If you’re trying to figure out the best scuba diving destinations in the world, here’s the honest answer: it depends on who you ask!

There’s no exact list because it depends on what you want to see, what kind of diving you like, and your certification level.

• There’s the place where you wake up at 4:30 am to see a thresher shark at sunrise
• The place where you’re clinging to a rock while manta rays fly overhead
• The drysuit dive between 2 tectonic plates in glacier water
• And the place where the shallow tropical reef is so beautiful you forget to check your air (guilty!)

And all of them are “the best” for different reasons.

Some dive destinations are all about big animals and biodiversity (my personal favorite as someone who worked with marine animals for years). Others are about wrecks, caves, or just relaxing, colorful reefs where you’re not fighting for your life in a current.

So instead of giving you a generic, one-size-fits-all list, I’m sharing the best scuba diving destinations for me. The ones I personally think are worth the trip, recommend to friends, and dream of going back to again and again.

Best scuba diving destinations in the world (My quick list!)

• Philippines (Malapascua) – thresher sharks at sunrise and insanely beautiful soft coral gardens
• Egypt (Marsa Alam) – pristine reefs, warm and shallow dives, excellent vis, and potential to see oceanic whitetip sharks
• Dominica – nature-forward trip, sperm whales, conservation-focused operators, and so much to see on non-diving days
• Hawaii (Lanai Cathedrals, Maui) – lava tubes, unique underwater landscapes, huge pods of spinner dolphins

How to choose the best scuba diving destination for you

Before picking a destination, ask yourself one thing: What do you actually want out of this trip? Because “best scuba diving in the world” isn’t one place.

• If you want big animals, you need the right ecosystem
• If you want easy, fun diving, you want calm conditions—not current-heavy sites
• If you want a challenge, you need places that push your skills with currents or other variables
• If you want a bucket list species, that narrows your options fast
• If you’re a beginner, prioritize destinations with calm conditions and better vis
• If you want nightlife and the buzz of city vibes after diving, you need to prioritize less remote dive destinations

A lot of people end up in beautiful places having very average dives because they didn’t match the destination to their goal. Also, dive sites change: an animal’s migration pattern may shift, a reef may bleach, or a previously remote spot might become overrun.

Best scuba diving destinations for sharks, manta rays, and big animals

Indonesia (Komodo National Park)

• Certification Level: Advanced Open Water (recommended 50+ dives)
• Best Time to Go: April–November (best conditions vary by site)
• Type of Diving: Drift diving, current-heavy, advanced conditions
• Standout Marine Life: Manta rays, reef sharks, whale sharks, insane biodiversity

Komodo is one of the best scuba diving destinations in the world for mantas, but it’s not for beginners. Most dives involve strong, shifting currents and negative entries, so you need to be comfy in the water with changing conditions.

That said, currents = life, and Komodo delivers! You can see mantas, reef sharks, and just an overwhelming amount of biodiversity on dramatic reef walls and reefs.

I haven’t had the best liveaboard experiences, so if I went back, I’d do land-based diving out of Labuan Bajo (a DM there told me you can reach most of the same sites without committing to a LOB, so if that’s not your style, you have options!).

One other cool thing I did in Komodo was contribute to a manta ray identification project, which added a fun layer to the experience. If you like citizen science and dive with a camera, it’s a fun way to get involved in conservation!

Philippines (Malapascua)

• Certification Level: All levels
• Best Time to Go: December–May (best visibility; sharks year-round)
• Type of Diving: Reef, wall, and early morning deep dives
• Standout Marine Life: Thresher sharks, soft coral, reef fish, tiger sharks if you’re lucky

Malapascua, Philippines, is my #1 favorite dive destination in the world. Not only is it one of the only places in the world where you can reliably see thresher sharks (as close to guaranteed as you can get with wildlife!), but there are GORGEOUS soft coral gardens, incredible reef walls, and it’s a total eat-sleep-dive experience.

Malapascua itself is a small island with little other than diving, so it has a great “summer camp” feel to it where everyone is there to dive.

In Malapascua, you can expect:

• Early morning dives
• Stationary shark viewing (so you should have good buoyancy!)
• Non shark dive sites, like Gato Island (cool topography and an optional cave!)

Best scuba diving destinations for beginners (and building confidence)

“Easy” diving doesn’t equal boring! Some of my favorite dives are just relaxing and taking in all the beauty around (me without having to fight currents the entire time).

So whether you’re newer to diving or just prefer relaxed dives, these are some of my favorite spots with good visibility, mild to no current, and stunning marine life!

Dominica

• Certification Level: All levels
• Best Time to Go: November–May (calmer conditions)
• Type of Diving: Reef, volcanic seascapes, relaxed diving
• Standout Marine Life: Healthy reefs, reef fish, sperm whales (topside), unique geothermal features

Dominica is one of the most underrated dive destinations in the Caribbean. It’s a small, rather undeveloped eastern Caribbean country near Martinique, and while I don’t usually recommend Caribbean diving, Dominica is one of the best scuba diving destinations for beginners, especially if you want your first dives to feel like exploration and not just training dives!

The diving is calm, visibility is great, and it feels more like exploration than training dives. It’s also perfect for mixed-level groups (I did my Advanced here while my partner did Open Water), and you don’t have that crowded feeling of places like Sharm El-Sheikh or the Great Barrier Reef!

I also love the unique seascape in Dominica. You can often see small bubble streams coming up from the ocean floor because Dominica is a volcanic island! If you hover your hand above the bubbles, you can actually feel the heat underwater.

Something else that I like about Dominica is that when you’re not diving, there’s a lot of nature to enjoy. You have a great year-round chance to see resident sperm whales, it’s a world-famous freediving destination, and you can hike and swim in waterfalls and hot springs.

The catch is that it’s not easy. There’s no Lyft or Uber, limited infrastructure, and few restaurants outside of the capital. So planning matters a lot here!

Egypt (Marsa Alam)

• Certification Level: All levels
• Best Time to Go: March–November (warmest water, best conditions)
• Type of Diving: Shore diving, reef diving, optional boat dives
• Standout Marine Life: Turtles, reef sharks, dolphins, dugongs, rays, and if you go in the right season oceanic white tip sharks!

Marsa Alam is one of the best places to get world-class diving without difficult conditions. It’s on Egypt’s southern Red Sea coast and feels way more laid-back and remote than other Red Sea destinations.

With excellent vis, warm water, and a lot of shallower dives, it’s one of those places where you can focus on enjoying the dive instead of managing it, and it still delivers massive healthy coral reefs, tons of sea turtles, blue spotted ribbontail rays, reef sharks, dolphins, dugongs (if you’re lucky!), and so much more!

Marsa Alam also has more advanced dive sites and boat dives, so it works whether you’re newer to diving or want something more advanced.

Best scuba diving destinations for unique underwater landscapes

Hawaii (Lanai Cathedrals, Maui)

• Certification Level: All levels (but some experience helps)
• Best Time to Go: May–September (calmer conditions)
• Type of Diving: Cavern, lava tubes, underwater topography
• Standout Marine Life: Spinner dolphins, reef fish, Hawaiian monk seals (if you’re super lucky!) unique geological features, and you may even hear humpback whales singing underwater in the right season!

The Lanai Cathedrals are one of the most visually unique dives I’ve ever done.

• Lava tubes and caverns
• Light beams cutting through the ceiling
• Large swim-throughs

But conditions can include deeper depths and variable entries, so do your research and be sure to pick a great dive shop!

Scuba liveaboard packing list (What you actually need)

As I mentioned above, I haven’t had the best experience on liveaboards and I think that had a lot to do with preparation and packing! So if you’re planning a liveaboard trip and don’t want to be scarred for life, packing well matters more than you think.

You’re on a boat for multiple days doing several dives per day, and you’re as limited as can be on both space and access to *things* if you forget them.
